About Me - Miss Megan Moore
Hello Everyone,
My name is Megan Moore and I am the Kindergarten teacher for St. Constance this school year. I am very excited to continue my teaching career at such a warm, welcoming, and helpful school and community. I have just completed my fifth year teaching and I can honestly say, this is the best job in the world.
This past year was filled with so many challenges. During the pandemic, we learned to grow together. We took on the e-Learning format, and while it had its challenges, it was also very rewarding. We learned to record videos, collaborate in a different way via zoom, and to explore new ways of learning. It was amazing to see the St. Constance School community come together to continue giving out students' the best education.
Here's a little what our curriculum looked like during e-Learning:
Reading/Language Arts - We used the program Raz-Plus. This online reading curriculum gives the children access to all types of leveled readers. I was able to assign books that the children would listen, read, and take a quiz on. This allowed for me to monitor how the students were doing and what we needed more time on. I was also able to record and listen to individual children read, and monitor whose levels were changing. This program also allows for independent practice for the children who love books and can access a wide variety all electronically.
Math - For math, we continued in our McGraw Hill textbook as well as iXL. During our weekly zoom meetings, I would share my screen and do mini lessons with the children. During these lessons we would work through problems together. We would also learn new ways of working through math problems and vocabulary. Following the lesson, the children would have to complete homework pages or iXL assignments. iXL is an online tool that gives the students access electronically to math skills.
Social Studies/Science - In regards to Social Studies and Science, we used a number of different methods. We relied heavily on Scholastic, BrainPop Jr, and Little Thinkers Science curriculum. The children would conduct/watch experiments, explore outdoors, make predictions, while also learning about the world around them. I assembled Science Packets for the children that went along with the lessons. The students would complete these during the lessons.
Religion - For religion, we used the Family Life and Blest Are We workbooks. For these lessons, I would project the pages on the screen, while posing questions for thought. The curriculum for Religion is focused on understanding Jesus and God and how they want us to treat others. We focus a lot on basic prayers, church behavior, bible stories, and treating others with respect, kindness, and love.
Handwriting/Phonics - For handwriting and phonics, I like to connect the two. We will learn about a letter each week. We talk about the sound a letter makes, phonemic awareness, and how to write the letter in manuscript. We use the Zaner-Bloser Kindergarten Handwriting book and the Pearson Phonics book - Level K. We use a lot of songs to help with phonetic sounds and building words. We also go on letter hunts.
Sight Words - Sight word practice during the pandemic consisted of reading sight word books from Raz-Plus, sight word packets, and sight word games. Sight words are a major aspect in a young readers education and the more they know, the more they can read. I monitor and test the students sight word recollection each month, beginning with Fry's First 100 Words.
Overall, we have come to a pretty diverse, interactive, and successful way of online learning for Kindergarten. I would post daily videos to help keep the students engaged and to help working parents who needed their children to be able to work independently.
I have worked with kids my entire life in different aspects. I have experience teaching swim lessons, being a preschool and kindergarten assistant, as well as a substitute teacher. I absolutely love sharing, exploring, learning, growing, and am pleased I get to share the year with you.
I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education. I completed my student teaching in Second grade and fell in love with mini humans. The three main goals of my classroom will include creating an open environment to explore, giving guidance in order for them to grow, and the opportunity to take on challenges everyday.
I think it is so important that my classroom is a safe palace for my students to come. I believe that it is important to show every student that they are loved no matter their differences. Children are different in so many ways - I believe it is important to celebrate the differences. One way that I do this is with my learning environment. I promote positive reinforcement in my classroom. I use a lot of sticker charts, kindness coins, and praise. I try to incorporate student interests into my learning. This might be teaching a lesson outside, using song or dance, or even dressing up or using something silly for a lesson. My main goal is to keep children as engaged as possible because if a child is engaged and having fun, THEY ARE GOING TO LEARN!
I am excited to share this journey with you and I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish together this year.
